Dane and Dobie

I love that New York is really dog friendly. It seems like people have dogs instead of children. When my hubby and I picked up and moved from Texas, we brought our pups with us. I’m not a creepy dog person, but my dogs are basically my kids. They’re also my live security system and great walking buddies. 

We tend to get a lot more attention on walks than we realized we would because our dogs are VERY large. Irie is our two and a half year-old female Great Dane and Kaiser is our  three and a half year-old male Doberman Pinscher. Kaiser is a pretty massive Doberman. His stature is uncommon as he weighs about 120 pounds (the normal maximum weight for his breed is 80 pounds). Thankfully we have a “small” Great Dane. Irie was the runt of her litter and she’s only about 120 pounds. I’m just glad that she doesn’t come close to her brother from another litter. He was 230 pounds (yikes). Both of our dogs are AKC certified, well trained and friendly.

Needless to say, it’s a little intimidating if you see both of my dogs walking down the street together. It’s scary as hell if you don’t like dogs. We get all sorts of comments.

The usual:
“Where are your saddles?!”
“Those guys can eat you for a snack.”
“You got a couple of horses!”

My favorites:
“That is a big ass Doberman!”
“It’s like a…a baby bear!”
“Oh! She’s a panther!”

I’ve been approached by a celebrity incognito on the way to Central Park and I’m often stopped so that people can pet my domestic duo.  On the way back from the dog park last fall, I was approached by fashion photographer Duc Nguyen for Kaiser and Irie to participate in a photo shoot for the fashion website Metrovelvet.
